Charging Electric Vehicles
Hazelmead has shared electric vehicle chargers for residents, powered by the community microgrid. Here's how to get set up and start charging.
Where the chargers are
The chargers are on the charging posts at the top of the site, beside the community battery. Ten posts are fitted with charge plates, and two currently have live Easee chargers installed. More chargers can be added to the existing posts as demand grows.
Each charger has a standard Type 2 socket, so it works with any electric vehicle using your own Type 2 charging cable. Chargers are rated up to 22 kW, but most cars charge at around 7 kW (up to 11 kW for some), depending on the car and the cable. Please don't use adaptors on the charger or the cable.
Getting set up
Charging is controlled through the Easee app, so you need to be added as a user before you can charge. It takes a few minutes.
- Email us at hello@hazelmead.energy with your name and house number, and ask to be set up for EV charging. We'll send you an Easee invitation by email.
- Install the Easee app on your phone (search for "Easee" in the App Store or Google Play) and create an Easee account using the same email address we sent the invitation to.
- Accept the invitation using the link in our email. The Hazelmead chargers will then appear in your app.
If you already have an Easee account from elsewhere, you can accept the invitation with that account instead of creating a new one. If the chargers don't appear after accepting, let us know and we'll check your access.
Charging your car
- Park at a charging post with a free charger and plug your cable into the car and the charger's Type 2 socket.
- Open the Easee app, select the charger you're plugged into, and tap the charge button to start.
- The light stripe on the charger shows what it's doing: it'll change once charging has started. You can watch progress and stop the session from the app.
- When you're done, stop the session in the app and unplug. Please move your car once it's charged so the charger is free for your neighbours.
You can also set a charging schedule in the app if you'd rather charge overnight.
Charging pauses between 5pm and 7pm
Electricity is at its most expensive during the early-evening peak, so the Hazelmead chargers pause every day from 5pm to 7pm (UK local time) and resume automatically at 7pm. This keeps the community's energy costs down and is the same across all chargers on site.
You don't need to do anything: if your car is plugged in and a session is running when 5pm arrives, it will simply wait and carry on at 7pm. If you plug in during the pause, start your session as normal in the app and charging will begin at 7pm. If you need a charge before the evening, plug in earlier in the afternoon or leave it on overnight.
If something isn't working
Charger doesn't appear in the app? Make sure you've accepted the invitation with the account you're logged in with, then email us.
Not charging between 5pm and 7pm? That's the daily peak-time pause, not a fault — charging resumes on its own at 7pm.
Car won't start charging? Check the cable is fully pushed in at both ends, then try stopping and restarting the session in the app. Some cars pause charging themselves when the battery is nearly full.
Charging seems slow? 6–8 kW is normal for most cars. The rate depends on your car and cable, and the chargers share the site's supply with everyone's homes.
Anything else? Email hello@hazelmead.energy with the post number and roughly when the problem happened, and we'll look at the charger remotely.
Costs and billing
Details of EV charging tariffs and how charging is billed will be published here. We'll write to everyone set up for charging before any changes take effect.
Adding more chargers
Additional chargers can be fitted to the existing charging posts. If you'd like to see more chargers at Hazelmead, please raise it with the community — and if you're getting an electric vehicle, let us know so we can plan capacity.
